
It was 2018. I was in a dark place mentally and I felt stuck and hopeless about my future.
I was working in my family business, and my relationship with my family members were strained and at its lowest point.
I found it difficult to gather the motivation to do the things I enjoy, and I was drifting by life aimlessly.
I knew I couldn’t keep living like this, but I didn’t know what I should be doing with my life either.
During this period, I travelled to Delhi on a work trip. While I was there, I happened to visit Kunzum Cafe, an interesting place where there were hundreds of post-it notes and scrapbooks filled with travellers’ experiences.
Reading the experiences of other travellers was very inspiring and I decided to take a long-term solo trip.
I started saving up money and made up my mind to travel around Himachal for at least three months.
Before setting out on my trip, I decided to delete all my social media apps including WhatsApp and take a break from all social media. Doing this forced me to become more aware of my thinking and interact with people more during the trip instead of distracting myself with my phone.
I ended up travelling around Himachal for a month and spent the next two months travelling to other parts of India based on the suggestions of the travellers I met along the way.
During the trip I discovered what I love and enjoy more than anything else is meeting new people and having stimulating conversations. This could be such a high!
I was someone who was shy and had lot of inhibitions. But as the trip progressed, I slowly became someone who was more confident, self-assured and outgoing.
I had the best week of my life in Udaipur, where I ended up staying in four different backpacker hostels, celebrated my 23rd birthday and had an unforgettable time with some amazing people from around the world who were solo travelling just like me.
The trip was not all rosy, and I found myself in a lot of uncomfortable situations. But having these uncomfortable experiences forced me to learn to deal with my emotions better.
Instead of fighting and suppressing my negative emotions, I realised that the key to deal with unpleasant feelings effectively was to accept and feel your emotions fully without judging them.
Doing this has incredibly helpful and it has radically improved my emotional wellbeing.
During the trip, I observed that so many of my thoughts and pre-conceived notions regarding different experiences, places and people were repeatedly proven wrong.
This was actually liberating because it helped me to stop overthinking, be more open minded and say yes to many new experiences I would have previously turned down without a second thought.
When I came back home after the trip, I was a different person.
The fear I had about my future faded, and I was free from the negative thoughts and emotions that was bogging me down for a long time.
I experienced some amazing synchronicities during the trip that made me convinced that there is a greater intelligence is pulling the strings, and all I needed to do was trust and have faith instead of being in a state of fear and attracting unfavourable outcomes.
Deciding to solo travel around India for three months has not only been the most life changing thing I did, but it has also been the best decision I have made in my life.
